New pre-print extending our study of carbon-aware scientific workflows
We prepared a new article that systematically assesses the potential of carbon-aware temporal shifting, pausing and resuming, and resource scaling. For this, we studied various real Nextflow workflows, compute clusters, and energy grid data.
The paper is currently under review, but a pre-print of the article, titled “A Systematic Evaluation of the Potential of Carbon-Aware Execution for Scientific Workflows”, is available on arXiv. In addition, the results repository is available on GitHub.
This work extends the preliminary results of our short paper “Exploring the Potential of Carbon-Aware Execution for Scientific Workflows”, presented earlier this year at CCGrid’25. Going beyond the short paper, we have improved our methodology, extended our evaluation, and discussed our results as well as threats to validity more comprehensively.
